Redan High School Reviews

This is our first year at Redan High. My son is in the 9th grade and we were desperately looking for another option. My son got into the Marching Band and he was hooked. School principal tell us that just because our kids are in high school now does not mean we should let go. Yet, teachers say, 'they don't put in info on the parent portal, they tell the kids and if the kids tell the parents it's on them.' I am not sure how to keep my child on track yet.

Unfortunately Redan has gone down since the years have past, but it is still a good school. The school is in need of strong, fair leadership. Even though the leadership is not as strong there are still plenty of good teachers there that have been there for many years. The academics can always be better but that is with any school. Redan has a reputation of doing exceptionally well on the Georgia High School Graduation Test and if I am not mistaken they now rank No. 1 in the county and for the past years we have come in 3rd and 2nd. I attended Stephenson High School and later transferred because I did not like the school, the lack of enthusiasm from teachers, and the many discipline problems there. When I attended Redan my grades got much better and there weren't as many behavior problems like I witnessed at Stephenson.

Worst school in Dekalb, lack of encouragement from staff, staff more focused on discipline then academics.

I am a 2001 alumni of Redan High School who attended Spelman College after high School. I have been teaching for 3 years and have now finished my Master's in Counseling. I enjoyed my 4 years at Redan. We had an excellent principal (McGrady) and I had wonderful teachers that inspired me to do exactly what I am doing today(Major Greer, Sgt Flowers, Ms. Crawford, and Ms. Bogar) Although I did not feel Redan adequately prepared me for college it still gave me a love for education that has served me well thus far. I am disappointed with the condition of the school at this present time. I had an opportunity to substitute teach there in 2005 and it was not the same school that I loved. Yes, the students are running the school and the administration is allowing it.

I feel like I could have been given a greater opportunity. I feel like the teachers were too stuck in the unfairness of black society. Instead of looking ahead and what we can do with ourselves as young black people. We were called names and put down. I remember my home economics teacher telling us that she would not do the project of caring for eggs as if they were children because majority of us were going to have children before we graduated. I feel the teachers could have been a lot more positive toward us students and maybe we would have graduated with a greater outlook on life. I was happy that my mother moved and my siblings do not have to attend that school. They now attend a school that does a lot more in academics.

Nice school, teachers could care a bit more.

I do not recommend this school for anybody. Its horrible school. I am taking my child out of Redan. The faculty has no control.

I am a current student at redan high school and i believe that redan has potential to be a great school. however these things cannot happen unless some things change. yeah its true that what we lack in academics we make up for in other areas but extra curricular is not an option without an education. as a transfer student from another county, i felt as if the faculty arent as hard as they should be on the student body. We also need more parent involvement. we are short on teachers in certain departments! there is no reason why 3 different levels of spanish should be in one classroom all during the same period.

Redan High School has many very committed teachers, counselors, administrators who actually care about the students. The Band is wonderful, but I would love to see an increase in the orchestra. Modern dance and acting in the classics should be implemented as well, such as classical musicals along with drama. There are differnet genre's of the arts. I would love to see more parents involved.

I am currently a student at Redan High School and I am a junior graduating in 2008. These past 3 years were good but I expected more variety with lunch. I also expected the teachers to stop talking about themselves and keep their personal problems at home and when they get at school to just teach us. I am very disappointed on how disrespectful teenagers has become so I hope that the discipline procedure changes because apparently the students don't care. Overall my classes are good and the teachers are good too. As for the classes I think they should provide more AP classes for students who can handle it.

i think that Redan High School is a very good school in after school activities. i think that Redan could be a lot better if they had more parent involvement in the school. i think that the school needs more teachers and some windows in the school. But over all i think that Redan High School is a great school to send your kids.

As a class of 2000 graduate I cannot relate to the current issues going on at Redan. All I can speak of is my past and the effect it has on me now that I am an adult. I think what Redan lacks in academics, they make up for in other areas. I didn't realize just how far behind I was in academics until I left Redan for Howard University in the fall of 2000. The first two years at Howard, academically speaking, were awful. I was struggling like never before. I was told by many of my professors that I should rethink college. However, the never die attitude (which I learned from Mr. Moore at Redan) helped me to immerse myself in my studies so I would be a success. In May 04 I received my B.S. in Psychology and now I have a great job. So thank you Redan.

I graduated from Redan High School in the class of 2005. Redan High School did prepare me for the college. I am now a freshman at Georgia Southern University, and my first semester is going by like a breeze. Redan does have committed teachers (Ms. Elder, Mr. Coleman, Ms. Baskett, Mr. Amica, and Ms. L. Smith). All of these teachers helped me to graduate and go on to college without worrying if I can handle the college workload. The administration did somewhat lack the connection with the students that it needed. The school lunch was something to stay away from, and was very unhealthy and monotonous. We ate cheese three to four days out of the week. But despite the little things, Redan High School was a great experience for me, and has equipped me with the tools that I need to succeed. -Derek (Class of 2005)

I graduated from Redan in 2000,and in the four years I attended I had fun. The teachers at the time were very encouraging to the fullest. Our class I believe was the closest of all.I guess after the years had gone so did the good teachers like Mrs. Vaughn(Science), Mrs.Adamson(Accounting),and many more. They kept me going to complete with a diploma and showed me there is more out there if you put your mind.I see there are still some good teachers teaching such as Mrs.Braylark, La Sonya Smith, and many more.My friends and I attended up where we chose to go.I have my B.A. in Business @FIU working on my masters at the age of 24.Its not the teachers only but the students with no respect for teachers.I may have gave some disciplin problems but thats every young adults.Straighten up when you get out and move on to be older adults in life.Redan for life

I came from up north, so the learning environment seemed lacking when I came to Georgia. More funding does not equal more effort! There is no reason why UNEFFECTIVE teachers and principals are still teaching. The quality of education has reduced to test taking skills, which do not prepare you for the real world; (competitive college students). I think most of my class (2001) are now at Georgia Perimeter College instead of Emory of UGA. Bottomline: We were NOT prepared. The community needs to stop settling for MEDIOCRITY. Redan should prepare and teach students on a magnet level, 9th graders should be dissecting in biology, lunches should healthier.

I've been a student here at redan for four years, I will be graduating this years for that class of 2005, and I truly believe that this school has really changed since mr. Mcgrady left. Now for the teachers don't get me wrong we have some good teachers at the school i.E. Mrs. Braylark, mrs. Joy, mrs. Elder and mrs crawford. But we also have the ones that can't teach at all. So in my opinion I believe this needs alot of help in order to make it. -Aseniorfromtheclassof2005

This is my last of four years attending Redan and for me, it has been a step down in education. It does not even compare to the other schools I have attended out of state. Some of the teachers and other staff are not as motivational as they should be, but some are. I do not think that Redan is as organized as it should be, especially this year due to the block scheduling and the new high school being used to relieve the crowding. I also think that the building is not a benefical learning environment.

I am a student at Redan High school, class of '07, this is my first year and iso far i really dont like it. Adminstration only care about us pulling up pants and tucking in shirts, thats not the problem roaches and wasp invested classrooms is. They dont do their job fully and they need better lunches and improve their school spirits.

Redan High School needs renovation badly. The administration doesn't even backup the teachers or give them what they need to have a successful lesson. Example one really good World Lit. teacher quit because the administration wouldn't help her out. I am a student at Redan who graduates the year 2007. What's the point in tucking in the shirts it doesn't make a gosh darn difference even several parents said so they even said it makes no sense. Redan high school is rundown and dirty just like our lunch. It's not healthy to eat cheese and fries every single God given day. what ever happened to Pizza Hut the pizza now is very unhealthy I got sick my first bite. That's why parents and kids hate Redan right now. Redan's band, sports, and other activities bring students there. Congrats to my fellow band members on winning first place in Los Angeles, California.

With two kids here I'm very pleased, kids are safe, and teachers do challenge the kids, I could send them to a newer school or bus them across town but those schools have there problems to.

My visit went extremely well, thanks to the insight given by Ms. Mary Webb. She is an angel sent from heaven! I thank God for her!

This school lacks leadership and focus. The teachers are ready to work but there is no backing from the administration. This school could rank much higher than it does.

this school needs to have more disciplinary action and an officer for every trailer and hallway.

Redan High is a very nice school, the GHSGT test scores of Redan are higher than the state norm and the students at this school are unbelieveably dedicated.
