When it comes to safety and discipline, it ranks #1. Why? It starts with administrative leadership, followed closely with teacher by in and support and linked with student and parent accountability. The standards for student learning and discipline are high and the expectations are repeated to the student daily in the mornings and evenings. All educators are involved in the academic achievements of the school from the front office staff to the custodians, food service workers and bus drivers. Athletically, they rank high amongst all middle school, bringing home several 1st place trophies. They also have a strong parental presence and support for the PTSA and School Council. I have Never felt safe. Nor have i been educated to the teachers best ability due to the fact that the discipline is rare. The principal has not really been trying to make changes for the students and the voting for Student council is useless. The extracurricular activities standards are some what okay. Sixth grade was challenging regarding discipline in the school. I attended several field trips as a chaperone and I realized that the teachers have their work cut out for them. Seventh grade was much better for my daughter. My daughter was in the seventh grade band - they are the best - you should see them perform - Go Mrs. Stevenson. Administratively, the school put $ before the children by canceling the after school program because it didn't bring in enough $$s, and they did it with 2 months left in the school year. What a disruption for the students and the parents!! Despite all this, my daughter was able to get 5 As and a B for last quarter. I feel that the administration has not done their part in carrying out the Student Code concerning discipline. It is unfair to the students to have repeat offenders left in the school without consequences for their actions. Kendrick prides themselves in extracurricular activities. Such as football, track and field, basketball, and swimming. (Theres a section of the cafe dedicated to all of the sport accomplishments) So if your looking for a school for sports this is the school for you. And the other EC are okay as well. I'm currently attending 6 of the 10 myself. Most of the clubs are student governed so it teaches early leadership skills, because colleges not only look at grades but also what you do extra. As for the classroom itself, its far from the best. Buts its also far from the worse. Its somewhere in the middle. Most (about 85%) of the teachers are dedicated to the students. But sometimes I feel that Kendrick is more sports orientated than its academics. I am a 8th grader going on to high school now. Some of the teacher are dedictaed to their job and some are not. The teacher I had were helpful to my education. The only thing they didn't do was prepare us for high school. I believe, as parents we must stay on top of our children when it comes to their school work and there involvement in the school my child is struggling in a certain class, but it's not because the teachers aren't doing their job it's the childs level of learnig. when they have the sst meeting that's very helpful to me it shows me where my child is in his performance and gives me a opportunity to interact with his teacher on apersonal level.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 3 2005-05-25 “I have two grandchildren who attend this school. They are both failing; we have SST meetings regularly with their teachers. The strategies always sound good, but nothing ever happens. I have spoken with one of the counselors there regarding my 7th grader twice. Each time he was going to talk to the student and call me back. Haven't heard from him so far. The first time was at mid-term last quarter. The SST resulted in his being referred to the counselor and my hearing the results. Nothing yet and the school year is about over. It seems to me that the main focus is on behavioral issues, and not education. I donot want her completing 8th grade year at this school. Neither she nor I like the uncontrolled manner of the students and gang violence. The acedemic curriculum is unchallenging and geared towards kids on a lower skill set. The school has no structured way of preparing the students for the state exams. They only study a week prior to test taking. The teachers have no desire to be there. The students are wild and uncontrolled.There academic program offers no challenge what so ever! My daughter is in the 7th grade and thoroughly enjoys attending the particular schools. The principal is a warm friendly gentleman and the staff seems to care for our children.
