Toomer Elementary School Reviews

My son went to the Pre-K program last year. He enjoyed it and did well. Overall, I think the teachers were warm and caring. My son learned to read here. His class was diverse. There was a moderate amount of parent involvement. I think what is most impressive is the dedication of the parents and the community in supporting this school. All things considered, I think this was a good option for us because we weren't able to continue to send our son to a private preschool. One thing I did feel is that the school as a whole lacked the warmth but we were satisfied with our experience.

I love the small classroom size and family feel. My child started mid year and initially had difficulty adjusting to the reading program. Her teacher and the reading coordinator worked closely with me, and I always knew what was happening and how she was doing. There is a focus on reading with two sessions per day and a monthly storytelling (alternating between professional storytellers for the school and volunteers for individual classrooms). Toomer has a partnership with Fort MacPherson. The kids take lots of field trips my child went to Fort Mac, Imagine It, the circus, Center for Puppetry Arts last year. My child s teacher had a science club with lots of hands on activities and the kids participated in the One Fair (for science, social studies, and math projects). We get to bike to school, no carpool lanes. The school has a nice playground, gymnasium, auditorium/cafeteria, and green space.

This school is great. Where each child is known by the entire staff and where the teachers are able to challenge each student. Having access to the gifted program and a Chinese language program is an added bonus.

We were familiar with Toomer due to heavy community/parent involvement and decided to send our daughter to get a better understanding first hand. Our attitude was 'roll up our sleeves, get involved and give it a go'. If the school met our expectations, we would stay. If not, we would look for other options next year. We are overjoyed with Toomer. The kids are learning and loving it. The principal has a 'get it done' attitude. She looks out for each child as her own. Although the major hurtle is timely communication between the school and parents, this is something that isn't unique to Toomer and can be fixed with a little bit of work. The new PTA Board is already working at fixing some of these issues. The new Toomer website is always kept up to date and anything on the APS website applies to the Toomer families.

My daughters love school and are excelling academically. I love the Mandarin program and how much Chinese the children are learning!

My daughter attends this school and I am very happy with how much she has learned overall this past year. Not just academically but in culture and social skills. I look forward to her second year here.

My son will begin his third year at Toomer this fall. We have had a fantastic experience. He is an enthusiastic reader, loves math, and comes home talking about all the science experience. I feel the music and art department aren't as strong as it could be. My son takes a Chinese class everyday. He really enjoys going to school and gets along well with all of his friends.

My son started Toomer this year. I have been very impressed with the leadership of the principal and the teachers. I would really love to see more involvement from the parents. The school is definitely on it's way up.
