The DeKalb Peachtree Airport’s Good Neighbor Open House & Airshow is an experience that is bound to take you to new heights — at least vicariously.
Since World War I, the DeKalb Peachtree Airport has been an integral part of the metro-area’s aviation community — first as Camp Gordon (an army training base) and now as a civilian airport. That long heritage is why organizers of the Good Neighbor event are throwing open the airport’s doors (and hangars!) to welcome residents and visitors on May 30.
The open house will invite guests to get a behind-the-scenes look at the airport through booths and exhibits in Epps Hangar. Visitors will also have the chance to get up close and personal with such attractions as restored antique planes, World War II warriors (a fighter group), fire trucks, police vehicles, ambulances, helicopters and even commemorative Air Force airplanes such as the vintage P-51 Mustang. A children’s activities section will also be open.
But the star of the day remains the airshow. Jim Ellis Automotive Group Atlanta has sponsored an “over-the-top” show, which includes world class acts like Team Aeroshell, Team RV, Gary Ward in his MX2, Greg Koontz (whose two acts include landing the plane on the back of a moving truck and an inverted ribbon cut), as well as Larry King in a Pitts biplane.
Visitors can take an airplane or helicopter ride for an additional charge.
Members of Briarlake Baptist Church will sell concessions and the airport restaurant, The Downwind, will be open.
Safety is a top priority for the Federal Aviation Administration, which means that all containers, backpacks and coolers you bring will be subject to search during the open house. While the event's free, there's a $5 charge per vehicle (regardless of occupants). Vehicles must enter from Clairmont Road.
