City League Old Atlanta Classic is May 29-31

Rugged strength and agile beauty will unite horse and rider at the City League International Old Atlanta classic show-jumping event in Alpharetta May 28-31.

Considered an “extreme sport with a dress code” by those in the know, horse show jumping is thrilling and graceful at once.

For centuries people have been wowed by the contrast between the horse’s power and the fragile look of the rider. However, even more awe inspiring is the oneness between the two during a run of the course.

It only takes a fraction of a second to miss the mark, stumble over a fence or fall from the horse. But don’t expect that to happen very often, if at all, because City League International competitors are world-renowned for their skill.

The league holds events throughout the Southeast, and top riders from different cities compete in teams four. Participants come from all over: Charlotte, Asheville, Atlanta, Jacksonville and others, as well as Bogota, Colombia and San Juan.. Daniel Berrio and the Alpharetta Intimidators will represent the local area during the City League Old Atlanta Classic.

The Classic — held at the Wills Park Equestrian Center from Thursday, May 28-Sunday, May 31 – features events such as the Speed Class and the Jump Off. Other hunter/jumper classes are open to local junior-amateurs and professionals.

Scores are compiled until only the best riders are left to compete in the Grand Prix on Saturday evening at 7.

In addition to riding and jumping events, the Classic will also host family fun such as the City League Home and Garden Expo, Tiger Eye Duncan and his Frisbee Dogs, a Wild West show and other entertainment. Food vendors will be on hand.

Before the Grand Prix on Saturday, the Green Gate Gathering invites people to attend a full sit-down dinner (wear “snappy, casual and pink” attire). The dinner will raise money for the Green Gate Fund, which benefits cancer patients and their families. Tickets —  $85 for singles and $600 for a 8-person table — include admission into the Grand Prix.

Live stream of the shows will be available online here.
