carlacooksmith's Bio

I am a native of Savannah, Georgia and I began painting in March of 2006 after my husband presented me with watercolor painting classes as a gift.  Painting was something I always longed to do but previously never took the time to take a class.  I feel I have discovered a side of myself completely unknown to me.  Thus, I highly encourage anyone to step out and find the art within.  A thrilling discovery may await you as you begin to dance, write, paint, draw, act, sing or play an instrument.  Discover your art form.  Discover yourself.

Apparently, I have always been drawn to watercolor as all but one painting in my home are watercolors.  I love the way the paint washes over the paper; sometimes retaining a bright pigment and other times washing to a soft hue.  The element of water portrays action and oftten evokes passion in the beholder of a work in watercolor..  Water is unpredictable, and it is exciting to see where the water and paint will take you..

While I enjoyed the detail of "Waterfront Park" and "King's Courtyard," I believe my passion is found in abstracts as I am not bound by the drawing.

My best selling work to date is "Waiting for the Train" which has sold across the country and continues to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.  (See www.waitingforthetrain.com to read about how this painting took on a life of its own.)  My second best selling print is "King's Courtyard."  Being a new painter, my first paintings were like children and it was hard to conceive of letting go of the originals.  Thus, I entered my first art show with prints of the four paintings I had finished.  My favorite work to date is "Joy of the Dance."  I see something different every time I gaze upon it and I feel the passion of the players on the stage of my painting.

I feel a great release in painting and the gift of it has been a tremendous blessing.  The success of "Waiting for the Train" has been miraculous and I have been amazed at my welcome into the art world.  In November, I was invited to showcase my work at two one-woman shows in the historic district of Charleston, South Carolina.  I did a series of paintings entitled "Inspirations of Charleston" for those shows.

I am thankful to have had my work exhibited in corporate collections,  hospitals, doctor's offices, hotels,  galleries and retail stores in the U.S.  Additionally, I have provided commissioned works for individuals and businesses alike in the Atlanta area.
