Milton's Cuisine & Cocktail: Tradition meets cutting edge

Published: May 21, 2009

With its expansive tiered patio, emerald-colored lawn and perfectly plated meals, Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails drops a bit of East Hampton into North Atlanta.

If F. Scott Fitzgerald had lived in Alpharetta, he would have been sure to love the Southern charm and elegant style of this award-winning restaurant nestled in the historic Crabapple district.

A restored mid-1800s farmhouse and 1930s cottage in the up and coming Crabapple area set the scene for sociable gatherings with family and friends. It’s here at Milton’s (named for the former county it’s located in) that history and modern influences have been blended to create a posh place to dine in the suburbs.

Welcome to the New South.

In keeping with the trends, many restaurants throughout the country have expanded a traditional Southern menu to include cutting edge culinary techniques and unexpected flavors. All in all, it’s a subversive movement that will have your senses wholly engaged.

At Milton’s, Executive Chef Boyd A. Rose uses fresh local ingredients to concoct some of the most interesting and delicious dishes. And there is a definite emphasis on seafood prepared in a thoroughly Southern way.

Milton’s makes an effort to combine comfort food and high-end cuisine by including dinner menu appetizers like the fried green tomato stack (with goat cheese and tomato fondue $8), pimento cheese dip (sesame lavosh and garlic crostini $8) and the Gulf fritto misto (shrimp, grouper, scallops and dips $13).

Entrees like meatloaf ($13), catfish ($11/$15) and the flatiron steak ($23) have also won many fans. The Sunday brunch is a locals’ favorite with offerings such as quiche ($11), eggs Benedict ($10) and shrimp & grits — would you expect otherwise? — ($13).

Stop by the bar (outfitted with quaint fireplaces) after work or on the weekend to wind down from the day.
