Fickle Pickle: Southern favorites with a twist
Published: May 19, 2009
Despite its name, the Fickle Pickle in Roswell serves up decidedly delicious Southern favorites with a contemporary twist — Fried Cajun Pickles, anyone?
It’s not a wonder the old blue Victorian-era home on Canton Street oozes Southern charm with its giant shade trees, beckoning porches and friendly staff. Delicious aromas and gorgeous desserts on display don’t hurt, either.
But if you’re expecting a full-service restaurant, think again. Don’t wait to be seated when you arrive. Just like at home, you’ve got to head toward the kitchen to find the food! At the Fickle Pickle, diners place their orders from handwritten menu boards cafeteria-style. You pay up front, fill your own glass and take a number (so servers know where to take the food when it’s ready).
While you wait, feel free to find a cozy table inside the home, where lovely paintings flank the clapboard walls. And if you fall in love with a painting, get out the checkbook because they're for sale.
But, on nice days there's nothing quite like a glass of sweet tea and a seat out on the porch or patio.
Perhaps it’s the ambiance of the old home or the low-key vibe, but there's a certain comfort level at the Fickle Pickle that extends all the way to the food.
At lunch, you’ll find some of the best hot and cold sandwich options anywhere in metro-Atlanta. Try the cold Smoked Salmon sandwich (lox-style salmon with pickled sweet onion and lettuce, $8.25 with side) or the roasted vVegetable (portobello mushroom, zucchini, red pepper, goat cheese and pesto, $8.25 with side). The hot fried green tomato sandwich (with pepper jack cheese, onion and arugula, $8.25 with side) is the stuff of local lore.
For dinner, try the Shrimp and Grits ($10.95), the Cheddar Biscuit Pot Pie ($10.25) or the Jambalaya (chicken, ham, sausage, rice and veggies, $10.25).
It’s those down home classics with an added modern flair the Fickle Pickle does best.
The Fickle Pickle has live music on Thursday nights on its patio. The restaurant also caters and hosts private parties — be they celebrations, rehearsal dinners, corporate functions, family parties and even weddings — in The Barn, its space for private parties. Prices range from $20 to $40 per person, which includes all taxes, tip and rental fees. Check the Special Events Guide for details.
