J. Christopher's serves breakfast with a side of art

Published: Apr 14, 2009

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so J. Christopher's takes its morning mandate seriously — going all out to do it right. You can get your fill of eggs, bacon, pancakes and even art at one of Atlanta's coziest brunch nooks.

In this city, just the name J. Christopher's can make a diner's mouth water. The company — named for founders Jay McCann and Chris Brogdan — is still relatively young. Founded in 1996, J. Christopher's has survived an eternity in finicky restaurant years. And locals have already pinned J. Christopher's as an Atlanta staple.

It's not difficult to see why.

J. Christopher's restaurants offer a feast for the eyes, as well as for the tabletop. Distinctive designs showcase a consistent, yet individual style tailored to the location of the store.

The Atlanta Street location (in historic Roswell) has transformed the old Public House restaurant building into a virtual art gallery. Patrons take take in locally acquired paintings and art, framed against rugged brick walls and rough hewn lumber ceilings, all while they sip coffee or chow down on an omelet.

While the beautiful decor at a J. Christopher's will make you smile, it's the food itself you'll fall in love with. Tongue-in-cheek menu items (like Eggs Christopher with smoked turkey and tomato, priced at $8.99; the Goddess egg-white omelet, $8.29; and Just Bubba biscuits and gravy, $7.99) offer classic breakfast and lunch staples, as well as few inventive house favorites.

In the mood for something sweet? Blueberry Crunchcakes ($7.49), Chocolate Chipcakes ($7.49) and Berry Crepes ($6.79) will satisfy that sweet-tooth! Looking for something more savory? Try the Spinach and Bacon breakfast skillet ($8.49), the Goldie-Lox (lox and a bagel, $11.99), a grilled quesadilla ($6.99–$8.59) or shrimp and grits. Seasonal items include the pumpkin pancakes, gingerbread waffles and egg nog cappuccinos.

The result is a place that seamlessly combines that traditional greasy spoon feel with the more upscale ambiance of an airy beachside diner or eclectic urban hotspot.
