Highland Tap: underground martinis and steaks
Published: Apr 14, 2009
For two decades, the Highland Tap Steak Cellar in the heart of Virginia-Highland has been serving great steaks and perfect martinis.
This cozy, subterranean steakhouse is the place for locals to enjoy succulent and tender beef in romantic candlelight, to watch a sporting event with friends on one of six flat screen TVs, or to just enjoy a magnificent cocktail.
These folks take their cocktails seriously, from traditional dry martinis to the fancier and trendier concoctions. Martinis come in a chilled glass with a second helping in a carafe floating in a glacial bath of ice cubes.
Try the Sweet Teeni with Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, a high-octane version of the Southern classic sweet tea. The staff is experienced, knowledgeable and will make you feel at home, even if you don’t hail from Hot-lanta.
Best known for slow-roasted prime rib and hickory grilled steaks, the kitchen also serves fresh seafood, chicken and vegetarian items.
The steaks are legendary and mouth-watering: the 14-ounce rib eye, the 20-ounce "Cowboy," 12-ounce filet mignon, and the pound or half pound New York strips. Add a crab cake, lobster tail or shrimp to your order, or pile on crawfish tails, hollandaise, or a crust of Gorgonzola.
Get your slow-roasted prime rib in a Queen (14-ounce), King (20-ounce) or Napoleon (28-ounce) cut. Side items include asparagus with hollandaise, haricot verts and Parmesan truffle potatoes.
For lighter meals, there is a tasty 10-ounce steak burger, a Tap Steak sandwich, fried grouper, hickory-grilled chicken breast, and a salmon BLT. Salads include a classic iceberg lettuce wedge, a roasted beet salad, a Southern fried chicken Salad, and a Tap Steak salad, featuring marinated sirloin on mixed greens with, tomato, cucumber and cheddar cheese served with steakhouse vinaigrette.
Appetizers include Blue Ribbon onion rings, escargot, mussels, fried calamari, BBQ shrimp, Carpaccio and Asiago Risotto Fritters.
Check the Highland Tap’s website for specials, menus and discount coupons for those new to the neighborhood. Because the dining room is intimate, reservations are recommended.
