Pure Taqueria: Escape to the beach, where the chips and magaritas flow

Published: Mar 11, 2009

How nice to escape the day and slip down to the shores of Mexico for a fresh fish taco or delicious margarita! Not practical? Pure Taqueria in Alpharetta offers the next best thing by bringing the Mexican ideal to the Atlanta suburbs.

What used to be an out-of-the-way street in downtown Alpharetta is now a hot spot for tastemakers who live just north of the city. Suburbanites craving their own "it" place had their prayers answered when the Sedgwick Restaurant Group opened Pure Taqueria in 2005.

The tiny building looks a bit like an old gas station, with its glass garage doors and antique signage. But there's also something very modern and beachy about the mosaic tiled walls, sleek lighting and incredibly trendy liquor display behind the bar. It's just the sort of place that offers a certain amount of relaxation but still manages to stay cool at the same time. Think causal date place or girls' night out.

Customers seeking refuge from work, the city, their children and the not-so-unique-chain-restaurants prevalent in the suburbs flock to Pure for its delicious family recipes straight from the shores of Oaxaca, Mexico. And the über-hip social environment doesn't hurt, either. Music and lively conversation are pretty typical at an average lunch or dinner at Pure, so don't go looking for a quiet meal.

Pure is known for its authentic and upscale menu. It has become the place in North Atlanta to get fish tacos (with poblano slaw and chipotle aioli), turnover-style stuffed quesadillas and grilled steak, served with jalapeño macaroni and cheese.

The beautiful presentation leaves you wondering whether you should even take a bite, but the smell tells you to go ahead. And with drinks like the Prickly Pear Margarita and Peach Mojito, it's easy to see why Pure has become the watering hole for those in the know.

Often, many diners gather on the front sidewalk sipping a drink and waiting for a table, so come early and be prepared to socialize while you wait. Parking is valet, though you can park on your own in one of the city lots just a block or two down the road.
