Versailles: experience Paris cuisine without leaving North Georgia

Published: Oct 29, 2009

You may not be Marie Antoinette or the king of ancient France, but you can still enjoy all the opulence of Versailles – at least in restaurant form.

As Chateau Elan’s premier restaurant (out of seven), Versailles may be a long ways from the outskirts of Paris, but it’s still fit for royalty.

The restaurant is located in the heart of the Chateau Elan Inn under a towering glass atrium ceiling, just below the front desk. Despite the fact that it is indoors, the sweeping views of the sky encourage the feeling of eating at an open-air restaurant. Tile floors stretch out for what seem like miles, a pergola brings the garden experience indoors and a wall of hedges provide just the right amount of privacy.

But even with all of the spaciousness of the faux-outdoors, Versailles still manages to hold onto a cozy atmosphere.

Inspired by the 1900-1939 Parians landmarks, the Quai d’Orsay railway station and the attached hotel Belle Epoque dining room, Versailles whisks diners through time and space.

The delicious food doesn’t hurt the experience either.

The breakfast buffet ($15.95) is one of the best things about staying at the Inn. A waffle and omelet buffet is the crowning glory of a buffet filled with hot and cold cereals, fruit, meat, eggs, pastries, bagels, grits, cheese blintzes, yogurt and more.

At lunch, a similar buffet ($18.95) features a salad bar, grill station (choose from chicken or burgers), or entrees like seared snapper with Chardonnay sauce, teriyaki flank steak with Cabernet wine sauce, Mediterranean bow tie pasta and desserts.

A dinner menu offers diners alluring options like a Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer (wasabi, pickled ginger, soy sauce, $11), Potato, Leek and Boursin Cheese Soup ($7), Seared Muscovy Duck Breast (Soba Noodles, stir fried vegetables, orange fig marmalade, $25) and Truffle Stuffed Sacchetti (sautéed shallots, peas, cherry tomatoes, white wine cream sauce, shaved pParmigiano Reggiano, $20).

A decadent dessert menu tops off your meal with six different sweet options.

A Thanksgiving Day Buffet (adults $55) is also available at Versailles.
