Sugar Pike Junction Restaurant: no frills, just food

Sep 28, 2009

Metro Atlanta may be fairly large, but there are outlaying areas that still hold onto some small town magic. Don’t believe it? Head north to Canton and stop in at the Sugar Pike Junction Restaurant for a quick bite and a nice chat.

At the point where Union Hill and Sugar Pike roads come together there is a tiny shack. Despite all outside appearances, there is something to be said about a breakfast and sandwich shop where trucks and SUV’s are packing out the gravel parking lot.

This ain’t Mayberry, but it’s awfully close.

An alternating train depot and Holstein dairy cow themes form an unlikely décor duo inside the two-room building, but that doesn’t seem to matter to “regulars.” The restaurant is the go-to place for a quick – or not so quick if you run into old friends – breakfast.

The fare is not fancy, but that’s the charm.

Whether you choose to dine in (if there is room at one of the two picnic bench style tables) or carry out it won’t take you long to run through the small menu.

Made-to-order biscuits can be stuffed with whatever you like; as long as you like, sausage, bacon, ham, tenderloin, steak, chicken, eggs, butter, cheese, jelly or gravy (or any combination). Or choose a breakfast wrap with your favorite filler instead.

The breakfast platters consist of eggs, grits, biscuits, jelly and your choice of bacon or sausage ($4.49).

For lunch choose a cold cut sub like the ham, $4.99; chicken salad, $4.69; egg salad, $3.99; or roast beef, $5.99. Hot subs include the pepperoni, $4.99 and pressed Cuban, $6.09. They also sell a hot dog, hamburgers and salads topped with a variety of different options.

Don’t forget to add a side like the macaroni salad (small, $1.69), black bean salad (small, $1.99) or chili (small, $2.09).

Simple and to the point, it’s the kind of Mom-and-Pop place that is slowly disappearing from modern America, which is what makes it worth the stop.
