Kilwin's is the sweetest thing
Published: Feb 19, 2009
For those of us who dream in sugar, the city has gotten a little sweeter ever since Kilwin's chocolate and ice cream shop opened in Atlantic Station.
Kilwin's, which opened over Valentine's Day weekend, has a long heritage of producing quality sweets for its salivating fan base. The first family-owned store opened in Northern Michigan during 1947. SInce then, the expanding company has found its way into several other select areas of the country, such as South Florida and Illinois. And now Atlanta has been included in the expansion.
As the only Kilwin's in Georgia, the shop continues the company's tradition of bringing a variety of handmade candies, ice cream flavors and other goodies to grateful customers.
Everything about the shop harkens back to a less complicated time. Even its decor and small bistro tables give Kilwin's an old-fashioned ice-cream or soda shop feel. Glass displays offer up numerous tasty treats like chocolate-covered pretzels, nuts, turtles, fudge and even rock candy.
And that's just the beginning. Freezers hold dozens of ice cream tubs, just waiting to be scooped into jumbo waffle cones (made on-site) or turned into hot fudge sundaes. Also, you're going to want to pick up some candy to send to a friend, or maybe stash away a carmel, chocolate and nut drizzled apple for yourself.
One of the nicest things about Kilwin's is that a lot of the goodies are made up front, not in the back, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Glass dividers allow customers to watch the entire candy making process from start to finish as ingredients are weighed, fudge is sliced and candy is boiled in copper pots. All while employees hawk items, or sing, yes, sing ("I've got hot fudge on a cloudy day...") about whatever they're doing in an effort to draw customers attention.
If the giant moose (the mascot) out front doesn't peak your interest, the smell of warm sugar certainly will.
