Pappasito's Cantina: make a run for the border

Sep 17, 2009

If the packed parking lot doesn’t tell you something about Pappasito’s Cantina, maybe the smell of warm tortillas, the sound of sizzling fajitas and your craving for more will.

This popular Tex-Mex cantina (located right next door to its sister restaurant, Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen) has earned a reputation for “legendary” food. Local residents and even visitors from other states travel long and short distances to consume some of the freshest Tex-Mex outside of the Lone Star state itself.

But the fun atmosphere at Pappasito’s Cantina is also a large draw.

Reminiscent of an actual border town cantina, Pappasito’s décor is full of endearing rough-around-the edges details like aluminum light fixtures, exposed brick and ceiling fans. Punches of bright colors in Spanish tiles, stained glass chandeliers, different colored light bulbs and decorative flowers on the table inspire a festive mood.

And speaking of festivities, the cantina offers three available party rooms: The Matador (seats 80), the Salon de Fiesta (seats 40) and the Patio (seats 100).

Whether you visit Pappasito’s for a fiesta, on date night or just to nosh on queso and chips at the bar, it’s hard to be disappointed by the menu.

Start your meal off with the Chile con Queso (lg. $7.75), the Shrimp Carnival (tempura fried shrimp served with sweet and spicy dip, $5.95, or the table-side guacamole ($9.95).

But save room for the main course like their famous fajitas. A small portion will feed one to two people (depending upon appetite). Choose between chicken, beef or shrimp combos.

Mouthwatering specials like the Carne Asada ($18.95), Agujas (basted with chile pasilla BBQ sauce, $21.95) and the Mahi Marisco (mahi, shrimp, scallops, spinach and avacado in cream sauce, $19.95) will have you saying “olé!”.

Family platters (like the Plato Fiesta: full rack of ribs, six Brochette-style shrimp, two mesquite-grilled quail, jalapeño sausage, beef and chicken fajitas, $104.95) and grilled combinations are also available.

Of course you can always tear into Pappasito’s tempting nachos, quesadillas or taco menus if that’s more to your taste.

One visit and you’re sure to feel hunger pains at the mere mention of Pappasito’s.
