The Firkin & Crown Pub and Restaurant taps into something deliciously social!
Jul 21, 2009
Brush up on your British accent and get to know some U.K. slang because the Firkin & Crown Pub and Restaurant will take you to England and back in one meal – or pint, whichever you prefer.
The franchised Firkin & Crown, part of the Firkin Pubs group, is everything that is good about both the English pub scene and American sports bars rolled into one.
Its tongue-in-cheek name refers to the British term for a 9-gallon wooden keg, or firkin. But staff t-shirts reveal just how amusing it can be to say: “Firkin Hungry?” “Firkin Thirsty” and “What’s your firkin deal?”
The fun doesn’t stop at the name though. Rich, dark woods, plush red velvet seating, ornate carpet and a centerpiece bar will all have you feeling welcomed like royalty, in the least stuffy way possible. And flat screen televisions (showing both British and U.S. sports), dartboards and pool tables remind you why pubs have been known as much for socializing as they have for comfort food throughout their history.
If you’re thirsty, the domestic and imported beer and wine selection will no doubt have something that will quench. However, just because pub is in the name and they serve “hops and grapes” (or beer and wine), it doesn’t mean the food is of a lesser caliber. If anything, it’s quite the opposite.
While you can come in for a game of pool and order soft jumbo pretzels, Irish nachos (waffle fries topped with melted cheese, bacon, green onions and sour cream) and chicken wings, there is more to this pub than just bar food.
Check out the traditional fish n’ chips, Cottage Pie (ground beef topped with whipped potatoes, peas and carrots), Bangers, Beans and Mash (pork sausages), the Guinness steak and mushroom pie, Mediterranean pasta salad or braised lamb shanks. The guacamole and bacon burger or the chili-cheese dog goes great with watching a soccer game. And the grilled ribeye, Jameson salmon and homemade chili are certain to be repeat favorites.
Remember to ask about daily specials, which are truly special (grouper over jasmine rice, anyone?).
Check out the Firkin & Crown’s special events too!
