TWO Urban Licks: a great place to grab a bite

Published: Feb 5, 2009

Nestled in an out-of-the-way old warehouse off Ralph McGill Boulevard, TWO Urban Licks is something of a trendsetter's secret. But it's definitely a secret worth sharing.

Despite its strange name, the restaurant's sultry jazz sounds and mood lighting will quickly set the uninformed straight: This place oozes cool.

Anyone celebrating special occasions or just looking for an upscale eatery will find TWO Urban attractive. Adding to its appeal is an ultra-hip interior -- complete with a 14-foot flame rotisserie at the center of the dining room, oversized floating fabric chandeliers, long linen draperies, an interior courtyard and a larger-than-life mural.

The deconstructed warehouse and its jazz vibe (live blues played Tuesdays and Thursdays)  lend TWO a laid-back atmosphere. It can feel almost like a lounge, with tables situated around throw pillows and white benches. The patio, with its views of the city skyline, is also a big draw on nice spring and summer evenings.

But it's the food that keeps local Atlantans and visitors coming back again and again.

TWO is known for its "fiery" American cuisine, which explains the bold rotisserie. So don't come expecting a lot of vegetarian or low-cal offerings, though they do have some.

Items such as "lamb lollipops" (lamb on a stick), "Tanglewood Farm duck breast," crab beignets, New  York strip,  shaved calamari and the "rocket salad" (a cranberry and feta affair) are among the most popular on the menu.

And you'd better save room for a dessert, such as the gorgeous cupcakes and ice cream. Or how about trying the a new twist on an old favorite with the blueberry shortcake?

The TWO experience might cost a bit more than dinner at the average chain -- from $7 for a salad to $28 for the New York strip.

The restaurant, part of the Concentrics Restaurant Group,  tends to be busy. Reservations are advisable.
