Bistro VG lives up to its art-master namesake

Published: Jun 24, 2009

Both foodies and fashionistas are bound to find something they can fall in love with at Bistro VG in Roswell – it’s an ethereal experience for all the senses.

Taking a page from any general guide to serenity, Bistro VG’s (formerly Van Gogh's) has an effortlessly chic style that melds all the poise of the French Riveria with the clean lines of urban industrial in a way that is unexpectedly perfect.

It can be hard not to gawk as you enter, since the low-key exterior and location of the restaurant (off busy Highway 92 in the Crabapple area) might not prepare you for what’s going on inside.

Guests will find themselves immediately at ease in rooms of bright whites, cool blues and natural accents bathed in natural and candle lighting. Details like the painted white brick walls, white slipcovers, glossy concrete floors, white leather chairs, glass tiles and a super modern fireplace surrounded by comfortable seating (wait here near the bar for a table on busy nights) all lend to a polished atmosphere that still feels relaxed.

For an even cozier evening with friends or family, be sure to reserve the Lotus Room — an enclosed booth perfect for chatting the night away privately with a small group as you enjoy dinner.

You'll almost certainly enjoy the quality wines and French-inspired cuisine any day of the year with a menu that is tweaked for the season.

Start your meal off right with the red and gold beet salad with goat’s milk ricotta on frisee lettuce ($7.95). Or have the tuna tartare “Guzman” with a ginger vinaigrette  and Tobiko caviar  ($14.95). Sophisticates might want to try the cheese or meat plates (choose three for $10.95).

Wood fired pizzas and pastas like linguini with littleneck clams ($16.95) are always popular selections. VG’s Chef Rich Velazquez is known for dishes like the seared spiced duck breast (with toasted eggplant fregola, garlic rapini and chermoula for $18.95) and the braised short ribs (served with spicy mac & cheese for $18.95).

If your appetite is modest, try one of the small plates, such as crab fritters ($9.95) or gnocchi ($7.95).

Whatever you choose, a visit to VG’s will practically have you floating, or at least sufficiently full.
