SmokeJack: the jack of all flavors

Published: Jun 9, 2009

Barbecue and blues fans will no doubt find nirvana at SmokeJack in Alpharetta. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to chow down, because this joint has it all!

A typical barbecue restaurant might have you wedged between patrons, eating off paper plates and struggling to use the plastic knife all in the name of first-rate food. But who says good eats has to come at the cost of good taste?

At SmokeJack you’ll get both. The restaurant has taken traditional barbeque principles and applied a touch of class.

The dining area combines industrial elements with more polished details, and the bar welcomes foodies and happy hour drop-ins. Beautiful exposed brick walls, built-in wine racks, dark, glossy wood accents and lively art pieces scattered throughout all help to add to SmokeJack's ambiance. Upstairs, the blues bar, which is open on weekends, literally calls out to music aficionados and the patio is perfect for a summer night.

However, the eatery’s simple-yet-sophisticated style is only a small portion of its lure. Diners truly come for the authentic barbecue cooked in styles from all over the country.

Start your meal off right with a portion of fried pickles ($5), pork nachos ($7.50), or Ribbies: smoked and sauced rib tips, ($8).

For dinner, try the North Georgia Rainbow Trout ($15.75), Meyer Ranch Hanger Steak ($17.75) or Hickory Smoked Ribeye ($18.75). Serious barbecue lovers will want something straight “from the pit". The "Low and Slow" Pulled Pork Shoulder with Carolina Mustard Sauce ($12.75) and Kansas City style charred brisket chunks ($16.75) make finger-lickin' good choices. Ribs come either wet-sauced (Kansas City-style) or dry-rubbed (Memphis-style). Both are delicious. Everything on the “pit” menu comes with two hearty sides like corn pudding, cheese grits, or collard greens.

If you’re in the mood for something a bit lighter, try the Citrus Marinated Grilled Shrimp Salad, Smoked Chicken Cobb Salad or the Pit Master BBQ Salad, accompanied by corn relish, ranch dressing and sweet barbecue sauce.
