Jazz Journeys fill Ga. Aquarium with blues waves

Published: May 28, 2009

What could turn an already out-of-this-world experience at the Georgia Aquarium into an extraordinary musical adventure? All that jazz, of course!

Jazz Journeys at the Georgia Aquarium are back by popular demand for its third year in a row.

Take in a Beluga whale while you listen to the smooth sounds of the saxophone. Watch the otters duck underwater to the rhythmic beat of the drums. See the whale shark glide through its tank as it’s heralded by a trumpet and trombone.

The summer event concert series is scheduled every Friday evening from May to September at 7 to 9:30 p.m. The series features talented jazz bands and musicians like Francine Reed, Victor Hodge and Friends, the Stephen Charles Band, Orquestra MaCuba and the Peachtree Jazz Edition.

But the best part? It’s free with general admission!

And this year, the aquarium has added an extra bonus by including drink specials and a new “Jazz Bites” menu, which features three gourmet packages created specially by Wolfgang Puck Catering. The package options include a Southern Picnic (fried chicken breast, cornbread, potato salad and more), a cheese tray (cheese, fruit, hummus and more) and Surf & Turf (tenderloin, shrimp, salad and more).

The Jazz Bites package costs range from $30 to $60, depending upon the option chosen and whether you're an aquarium member. Each option includes dessert and enough food for two. Orders must be placed by 8 a.m. the day before your Jazz Journey.

When you arrive at the aquarium, pick up your Jazz Bites and find a seat in the special VIP seating near the band. Don’t forget to wander the unique galleries after dinner!

Check the Jazz Journeys schedule online to find out when your favorite jazz musicians will perform. Advance general admission costs $26 per adult.
