Old Soldier's Day Parade and Race set for Aug. 1
Published: Jun 30, 2009
The Old Soldier’s Day Parade and Race in Alpharetta Aug. 1 continues the end-of-summer tradition that has set a patriotic tone every year since the early 1950s.
The celebratory parade began as a way to honor local veterans of the Civil War, but was discontinued in 1924 as the world began to change. Twenty-eight years later, in 1952, several Alpharetta residents revived the tradition and began to honor all veterans by walking though downtown Alpharetta together.
It’s been getting bigger and better every year since.
The day begins at 7 a.m. with a race through Alpharetta. In conjunction with the American Legion Post 201, the city will host music and a short program honoring veterans beginning at 8:45 a.m. in front of city hall.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. and the theme this year is “Lest we Forget.” Parade highlights include floats, bands, clowns, scout troops, horses and other entertainment. the event concludes with children’s activities, games, prizes and free food at the American Legion Post 201 on Wills Road.
While most activities during the day are free, for $15 ($20 day of race) participants of any age can run a 5K or 10K on the intermediate level course along Old Milton Parkway, Wills Road, Academy Street and Alpharetta Highway. Those roads will have portions closed to vehicles during the race.
Participants in the 10K race may qualify for the Peachtree Road Race the following year. Top racers win awards, and everyone receives a T-shirt. Same-day registration begins at 6 a.m.
You don’t have to be a veteran, race participant or walking in the parade to enjoy the day. Individuals and families are encouraged to join in.
It’s an Alpharetta tradition you don’t want to miss!
