Tanglewood Farm: the Wild West (with one little difference)
Published: Jun 1, 2009
The Wild West is closer than you think; but it just may be a bit smaller than you imagined. Take a tour of the old town at Tanglewood Farm in Canton - where miniature is magical!
At Tanglewood Farm you are invited to step back into the 1800s, when the Wild West capture the imagination of a nation — with one little difference.
In the real West, everything was larger than life. This small town is truly tiny when it comes to the animals that live there. Prepare yourself for more than 100 animals in miniature: miniature cows, miniature sheep, miniature goats, miniature horses, miniature chickens, miniature turkeys, miniature potbellied pigs and miniature donkeys.
It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before!
The town’s walking tour includes a bank, saloon, schoolhouse, livery stable, jail, mineshaft and trading post, where you can buy real snacks and souvenirs from the farm. Several of the replicated buildings are home to different types of miniature animals.
End your visit with a pony ride (children only) at the livery stable. A picnic area is open to visitors following their tour, but you are encouraged to bring your own blanket since tables are limited.
While the miniature animals are a main feature, there is more to the farm. Visitors — toddlers through adult — can sign up for riding lessons ($45 per hour). And cowpoke classes running from June through August teach children 5-15 basic horse grooming and handling skills. Attendees also take their miniature horses through an obstacle course and show off their newly learned skills to parents during a horse show at the end of a five-hour day.
The farm hosts “Barnyard Bash” parties where invitees can pet, feed and ride some of the animals. If you don’t feel like making the trip, the “town” will come to you, bringing with it several of its miniature stock to ride and pet.
Family tours of the town are open year round Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Large groups should schedule visits in advance and receive a group rate. Tickets cost $10 per person; children under one are free.
