Philips Arena: Atlanta's center for sports, music

Published: Apr 22, 2009

Philips Arena is practically the center of the universe for Atlanta sports and music fans. From fantastic play highlights to Billboard’s hottest stars; this is where the action happens.

The larger than life indoor venue — which cost an estimated $213 million to build in 1999 and took the place of the old Omni Coliseum sports venue — is home to the Hawks NBA team, the Thrashers NHL team and the Dream WNBA team. And it's the setting for performances from America's top stars, such as Beyonce, Keith Urban and Bruce Springsteen.

Everything about Philips screams excitement – even the architecture. The beautifully lit angles and enormous glass panes are stunning. While the seemingly abstract steel beams out front are both functional and awe inducing by playfully spelling out ATLANTA.

The enthusiastic nature of the venue is practically contagious. Since it first opened in 1999, people have clamored for the thrills that come with a ticket to every event at Philips.

Philips also plays host to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) events and comedians like Dane Cook.

Seating count varies with the configuration needed for different events, but there's always enough room for a small army. Thrashers games will seat 18,750 people, Hawks games will seat 18,729 people and any given concert might find up to 21,000 people with reserved seating.

Beyond the typical concessions, Philips also offers guests several restaurants and bars to choose from, as well as retail stores and interactive game rooms.

One of the best things about Philips Arena is its location. Smack dab in the middle of downtown Atlanta, the arena is next door to the Georgia World Congress Center, Omni Hotel and the CNN Center. It’s also within walking distance of Centennial Olympic Park. A MARTA stop for CNN/Philips Arena is located on the East/West line.

Residents and visitors to Atlanta will find something to do at the arena throughout the year. From hockey to basketball, country to pop, the arena has it all and you’ll never be at a loss for fun.
