Six Flags Over Georgia: Thrills in Atlanta's back yard

Published: Feb 25, 2009

Six Flags Over Georgia offers something for everyone in the family: gravity-defying roller coasters, caped superheros, bunny wabbits, choo-choo trains, live shows and ice cream.

For the first time in its 42–year history, Six Flags Over Georgia scheduled a February opening date  to the 100-acre park with 10 state-of-the-art roller coasters, two children's themed areas and live entertainment.

If you love roller coasters, the Southeast's largest regional theme park offers 10, from historic wooden coasters, heart-stopping thrill rides, and cartoon superheros. The park brags that is has "some of the fastest, tallest, wildest, gut-wrenchingest rides in the country-including a few record-breakers."

The 200-foot-tall Goliath steel coaster wouldn’t fit inside the park, so they ran it outside and back to accommodate its zero-gravity floating hills and drops. Superman: Ultimate Flight is the South's only flying roller coaster.

Batman: The Ride rips through the streets of a faux Gotham City with a one-of-a-kind heartline spin producing a feeling of weightlessness. You'll NEVER get a seat on the Georgia Scorcher, because it doesn't have any. The 11-story coaster dangles its passengers through a blazing figure eight, corkscrew and two vertical loops. The Fearless Freeps Dare Devil Dive features a 10-story free-fall.

For more conservative riders, or those who have recently eaten, there are oodles of tamer alternatives including the Confederate Sky Buckets, Thunder River and the Monster Mansion, a make-over of the park’s Monster Plantation, opening in May. Find your favorite rides on a park map.

The park has two kiddie areas allowing youngsters the opportunity to ride on Thomas the Tank Engine, get a picture take with the Batmobile, meet Bugs Bunny and other Loony Tunes characters and play the Wii Experience, trying out new applications in the popular Nintendo gaming system. To help parents keep track of youngers, the park provides SafetyTats: waterproof temporary tattoos marked with a parent's mobile phone number in case a child gets lost.

A lively new show called Pure Country opens Memorial Day weekend in the Crystal Pistol Music Hall. Catch the Best of Dick Clark's Bloopers, a new interactive show in the Drive–In Theatre. Cool off the sweltering Georgia heat at Cold Stone Express. Other live shows are the Wild West Comedy Gun Fight Show, the Looney Tunes Talent Show, the Back to the Beach Show and Bugs Bunny's Rockin' and Rollin' Parade. The park hosts a range of concerts and other special events year-round; consult the events calendar to find out what's coming up at the park.

To lure guests, the park is offering its lowest price in years on a season pass: $49: $10 less than the gate price. Season pass can visit any Six Flags theme park in the country, get five free tickets for friends, exclusive ride times and other savings. Hours for the park vary by day and season, so consult the park's web calendar for hours.
