Burt's Farm is the essence of fall

Published: Oct 12, 2009

Ask any longtime resident of North Georgia and they will tell you that Burt’s Farm is practically synonymous with fall.

The dazzling array of colorful pumpkins set in intoxicating mountain air will have you mesmerized whether it’s your first or fiftieth time to the farm. Fall just isn’t fall without a visit to Burt’s.

Most of us are still splashing around in swimming pools when Burt’s first begins to harvest its pumpkins. From late August until early November the farm opens its barnyard and store to the public.

But if you think all pumpkins are the same, think again.

At Burt’s the pumpkin variety is seemingly endless. Rows of pumpkins in different shapes, colors and sizes are lined up. Grab a wheel barrel and choose from small, medium and large pumpkins (some are over 150 pounds!) in colors ranging from light and bright orange, white, green and beige. Burt’s also offers an impressive array of squash, gourds (fresh and dried), as well as decorative Indian corn and hay bales.

Take the hayride ($3 children 12 and under; $4 adults) out to where the pumpkins are “born.” The nearly 30-minute ride winds up through the mountains, down through streams and out beside the pumpkin patches where talking mechanical pumpkins at a house made of pumpkins entertain the kids. The scenic mountain views from the tractor-pulled wagon are unforgettable.

When you return to the barn, grab a bag of popcorn or a slice of pumpkin bread to nosh on while you wander the store. Burt’s sells jams, jellies, apple and pumpkin butter, at-home popcorn grown on the farm, pumpkin rolls, pumpkin pies, candy, fried apple pies, boiled peanuts and cider, as well as pumpkin carving kits and decals.

There are also plenty of picture-worthy spots at the farm to take a family photo.

Picking out your annual pumpkin has never been so fun!

Burt’s accepts cash, Visa and MasterCard only. No personal checks are allowed. Fieldtrips are available to groups of 20 or more for $5 each. E-mail burtsfieldtrips@gmail.com for reservations beginning Aug. 1 of every year.
