Millennium Gate Museum: Monument to Atlanta History

Sep 18, 2009

The Millennium Gate is Atlanta’s version of the Arc de Triomphe, a classically-styled monumental arch located inside Atlantic Station in Midtown Atlanta.  Inside the towering monument is a 12,000-square-foot museum of Georgia history.

Erected in a new part of the city, the 101-foot monument was designed in the tradition of classical Roman triumphal arches that have been built around the world over the past 2,500 years. The Millennium Gate Museum offers interactive technology, film, and exhibitions designed to “preserve and interpret Georgia history, architecture, culture and philanthropic heritage as well as highlight Georgia’s historical and aesthetic relevance to the United States and to the world.”

Millennium Gate staff say the structure is “the largest public monument to be built since the construction of the Jefferson Memorial.”

The museum's Georgia Pioneer Gallery focuses on General Oglethorpe's creation of the Colony of Georgia with documents and historical artifacts from the native Indian, Spanish, British colonial and American Revolutionary periods.

Photos and other artifacts in the Atlanta Pioneer Gallery help narrate the story of Atlanta's early history and the bold leadership that has helped it grow into one a world city. Displays come from twenty of Atlanta's foremost pioneering families associated with Atlantic Steel. Families such as Adair, Candler, Glenn, Herndon, Rich and Woodruff helped shape the city’s social, economic, political, and philanthropic landscape.

The Interactive Philanthropy Gallery was created in partnership with Georgia Tech's Interactive Media Technology Centernand allows visitors to explore Atlanta and how philanthropy has changed the city's various neighborhoods. Visitors use Wii technology in an immersive theater setting to watch 150 years of growth and change in Downtown, Midtown, and the Atlanta University area. A second interactive component, developed by Playmotion, Inc., shows the impact of major philanthropy on city buildings. Waving a hand over the screen, visitors can experience Atlanta's evolution with historical perspective of multiple philanthropic locations.

The Millennium Gate Museum also features three period rooms: an 18th century Colonial study from Midway, Georgia, the  19th century office of Thomas K. Glenn as it would have looked when he was president of Atlantic Steel, and the 20th century drawing room of Pink House, the Rhodes-Robinson home designed by Philip Shutze. Docent-led group tours and tours for students are available.

Transcending Vision: American Impressionism 1870-1940 is on display at the Millennium Gate Museum through December 6. The exhibit is on loan from Bank of America through its Art in Our Communities Program.
