Berry Patch Farms: it doesn't get any fresher!

Jul 27, 2009

If you want produce that’s fresher than what you get from the farm stand, you have to go right to the farm. And it doesn’t get any more fresh than picking your own fruit at Berry Patch Farms in Woodstock.

You don’t have to be a farmer to get that straight-from-the-field freshness; you just need to find an open farm. Every year, the Berry Patch Farms opens to visitors for several seasonal goodies, including blueberries, pumpkins and Christmas trees. Not to mention the fun, family-friendly activities that go with the seasons!

During the summer Berry Patch is brimming with blueberries just begging to be picked. The farm starts welcoming pickers around the 4th of July and closes again in early August, depending upon the volume of picking and the reproduction pace of the blueberries. Berry Patch provides buckets for you to fill. Once you’ve picked what you want the cashier will weigh your fruit and tally your total cost at $1.69 per pound. It’s a fun activity to take children to do and it sure beats the mundane visit to the mall, just keep an eye out for poison ivy.

Take a hayride out to the pumpkin patch during weekends in October. After you pick out your perfect pumpkin, the ride will take you back to the front of the farm where you can get hot apple cider, a fried pie, popcorn and boiled peanuts, while basking in the fresh autumn air. Pumpkin pies, gourds, mini-pumpkins and Indian corn can also be purchased. The farm is open on weekdays from Oct. 19 – 30, 2009 from 3:30 p.m. – 7 p.m.

At Christmas the farm gets into the spirit of the season from Nov. 28 – Dec. 14, 2009. Chop-your-own tree - or just pick it out - and then sip some cider while you nibble on a funnel cake. Choose from three varieties of tree, including Leyland Cypress (grown on site), Fraser Fir and the Noble Fir. Tree stands and wreaths are also available.

No matter what the season, you are certain to find something to do at Berry Patch!
