Chattahoochee Rapids: a splashing good time

Published: Jul 1, 2009

In the humidity of a hot Georgia summer there are few things better than a lake — and the Chattahoochee Rapids Beach & Water Park at Lake Lanier Islands Resort comes pretty close to perfection as a way to beat the heat.

There is something wonderful about a water park during the summer. It’s the perfect combination of slides, rides, attractions, junk food and, of course, endless hours of splish-splashing fun in refreshingly cool water.

At Chattahoochee Rapids it doesn’t seem to matter whether you are 5, 25, or 65 — all ages experiences the joy of their inner child. With more than a dozen attractions and rides, there is no lack for things to do.

Those measuring over 42 inches will find thrills and spills on slides like Blackout, where you body slide down through an enclosed black tunnel. At SplashDown you can race a friend going down headfirst on mats and Raging River will allow you to twist and turn on single or double tubes.

Looking for something a little tamer, but still fun? Wild Waves is as close to the ocean as you can get in the middle of Georgia. Other rides and attractions at Chattahoochee Rapids include the Twister, the Intimidator, Triple Threat and the Fun Dunker. Lifeguards are stationed at each ride.

The younger, shorter set isn’t left out. The “Kiddie Lagoon” presents little ones with their own age-appropriate slides, waterspouts, stationary toys and things to climb. “Wiggle Waves” is the child-sized version of Wild Waves where you won’t have to worry they will be knocked down.

When you’ve had enough of the attractions, a half-mile of sandy beach is roped off for swimming in the lake.

Still looking from something to do? An acrobatic trampoline and ropes challenge course is open for nominal fees.

So throw on your bathing suit, grab your sunglasses and put on the sun block, because the beach and water park at Lake Lanier Island Resort is a must-visit. It’s a surefire way to fend off the dog days of summer.
