Mountain Park Aquatic Center: making a splash in Gwinnett
Published: Jun 23, 2009
To find out how Gwinnett County residents cool off in Georgia's sweltering summer heat, grab a swimsuit and dive head-first into the Mountain Park Aquatic Center, with an indoor competition/lap pool and exterior leisure pool.
The magnificent Mountain Park outdoor leisure pool is a playful watery oasis for all ages. Those in swim diapers can toddle through an ankle-deep section dotted with miniature geysers of water. Nearby, kids in Sponge Bob swimsuits frolic on play structures armed with water cannons and waterfalls.
Two giant water slides rise two stories above the pool, adding a splash of amusement park to the pool. A blue-tiled lazy river lets swimmers float in artificial current past a curtain of water.
Giant umbrellas and chaise lounge chairs line the poolside, but are usually snapped up quickly by moms and dads looking for a relaxing afternoon with a good book. Coolers and snacks are allowed at poolside. Snack machines carry Coke, Pepsi and an assortment of chips and candy. Note: Bring dollar bills or coins, because the front desk will NOT make change for the machines — although credit cards are accepted for admission.
Inside is a 25-yard by 25-meter competition/lap pool with diving boards, open year round. The facility also includes locker rooms with hot showers; bring your own shampoo and a padlock.
The public facility is operated by the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation department, which in 2008 was named the country's top park system by the National Recreation and Park Association. Check Gwinnett Parks website for swimming and other classes offered at this facility and others in the county.
The Mountain Park outdoor pool is open from Memorial Day until Labor Day; the indoor competition lap pool is open various hours year round, but some lap lanes may be limited to various programs.
Both pools are subject to closing for 30 minutes after thunderstorms. If either pool is contaminated by feces or vomit, they close for 24 hours. The facility offers no refunds due to inclement weather, so watch the weather forecast.
For the safety of swimmers, the lifeguards take a 15-minute break 45 minutes after every hour, when all swimmers must leave the outdoor pool and only adults may swim in the interior pool.
All bathers must wear swimsuits; cutoffs, jean shorts or gym shorts aren't allowed. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult in a swimsuit, who must go into the water and stay within reach of their children 6 or under at all times.
